On June 18th, over 14,299 Mexicans showed up at Zocalo, the main square in Mexico
City, to learn boxing. This broke the previous world record by a landslide. In Moscow,
Russia, there were only around 3,250 participants who attended the boxing class.
Fifteen Mexican fighters coached the people. Their names are listed below:
Erik “El Terrible” Morales, Andy Ruiz Jr., Oscar Valdez, Jackie Nava, Humberto
“Chiquita” González, Miguel Berchelt, Jose “Pipino” Cuevas, Alfonso Zamora, Jose Luis
Bueno, Jose Antonio “Jaguar” Aguirre, Ganigan Lopez, Adrian “Confesor” Hernandez,
Mariana Juarez, Ana Maria Torres and Alan David Picasso.
Attending boxing class was not an easy task. The attendees started with a tai-chi
warmup which, was followed by learning and practicing the different blows. The class ran for half an hour, and the attendees only had 20-second water breaks.
The gigantic boxing class was organized by the Sports Institute of Mexico City. Javier
Hidalgo Ponce, the director of the Sports Institute of Mexico City, said, “It will be a great
multicolored party because together we will form the Mexican flag with these beautiful
shirts that each and every one of the participants in the Massive Boxing Class will
have.”
Carmen Perez, a 16-year-old commented, “There is a very beautiful energy – very joyful,
a lot of joy.”
