Comedians are Wielding Their Humor to Fight for Abortion Rights

By: Summer Chu

“Oh God, an Hour About Abortion” is Allison Leiby’s new comedy show. As the title describes, it’s all about abortion. Leiby discusses her experiences having an abortion but with a sense of humor that no one would expect. An interview described her show as “a hilariously candid and fearless account of Leiby’s own experience navigating the big questions and mundane details of a personal decision — exercising reproductive rights in America.”

Other comedians like Lizz Winstead and Joyelle Nicole Johnson have also started performing about this topic. “Things are awesome — never better!” joked Lizz Winstead, the comedian, producer, abortion rights activist, and the co-creator of The Daily Show along with Madeleine Smithberg. “Sleeping well; no diarrhea. Things are awesome.”

On Joyelle Johnson’s show, Bro vs. Wade in Brooklyn, which Winstead organized recently with her group Abortion Access Front, she said, “Don’t be ashamed of having an abortion,” and proceeded to make jokes that made her audience collapse with laughter.

Since SCOTUS decided to overrule Roe v. Wade, more and more people like these three women have started putting this topic into their comedy shows to fight back against the ruling. And not only are stand-up comedians finding a way to put the subject in their shows, but abortion comedy in movies and tv shows is also all over the internet.

The movie “Unpregnant,” for example, is a buddy comedy movie with a theme of abortion. The film is about a 17-year-old pregnant Missouri teen named Veronica who embarks on a road trip with her best friend to New Mexico. It is all about them defying forces that are trying to stop them from getting to the goals they want to achieve while holding a humorous atmosphere the entire time.

Whether it’s in stand-up, movies, or any other forms of media, it seems as though SCOTUS’s decision to remove abortion rights has caused the argument to start being part of all forms of comedy.
