“Edible Cement” Helps Eliminate Food Waste

At the University of Tokyo, scientists have found a way to make “edible cement”. This edible cement is a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions a lot.

As an article by the NewsRoom team in Twinkl NewsRoom states, “The researchers have found that a variety of foods can be used to make the ‘edible cement’. These include banana peel, onions, orange peel, tea leaves, coffee grounds, and pumpkin.” Cabbage leaves give the best result.

To make the cement, the scientists first dried the food waste. Then, they crushed the waste and pressed it into a mold. The researchers say that the edible cement can also be turned back into food by breaking it apart and boiling it

Every year, about 900 million tons of food is thrown away. Food waste is responsible for 10% of greenhouse gas emissions. The edible cement takes up less space in landfills. Greenhouse gasses are bad for the environment, so this helps minimize greenhouse gas emissions.

Edible cement is the way to go in the future.
