Simone Biles Returns to Her Third Olympics After a Two-Year Break

By: Chloe Wu

After two years of trying to distance herself, Simone Biles decided to return to gymnastics. In those two years, she went to therapy to work on her mental health. After her marriage this past April, she slowly began to train again, but still hesitates on whether she should return to the Olympics.

Simone Biles is an extremely accolated gymnast, winning 25 World Championship medals and receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Joe Biden. Following the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, however, she left the sport for some time due to the pressure and expectations forced upon her.

Fortunately, after her two-year break, Simone felt better mentally and physically. In the spring of this year, Simone decided to train more seriously.

She made her debut in the U.S. Classic on August 5th. As she stepped on the podium, the audience shrieked in support and excitement.

“I feel really good about where I am right now, mentally and physically,” Biles said. “I

still think there are some things to work on in my routines, but for the first meet back, I would say it went pretty well. I’m very shocked. Surprised.” (NPR)

She won three of the four events she competed in and won overall by a huge margin. The U.S. Championships are later in this month, followed by world championships in October and the Olympics in less than a year.

Whether Simone decides to participate in the Olympics or not, she is irrefutably one of the best gymnasts in history. She is a sports icon, and her enduring legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
