One of Brazil’s biggest soccer stars just announced her retirement after going into her 6th World Cup. Marta started playing in the World Cup at the age of 17 and now, at age 37, she has decided it will be her last.
Despite Brazil’s hopes, they were eliminated after a draw against Jamaica. This was way earlier than they had expected and they were crushed to not be able to bring home the trophy for Marta as Argentina did for Messi.
During her career, Marta accomplished so many things. Among women or men, she carries an all-time scoring record and won the Olympic silver medal two times.
Even though she had wished for her journey to not end like this, with a devastating loss, Marta is super grateful to have been given the opportunity to play with the team for this long and she will keep supporting them, but in the future from the sidelines.
“I’m very happy with all that has been happening in women’s football in Brazil and in the world. Keep supporting,” she said, tears glazing her eyes. “Because for them, it’s just the beginning. For me, it’s the end of the line now.”
