When a player scores in basketball, typically high-fives happen, followed by slaps on the back, and then the game moves on. However, when Diana Taurasi launched a 3-pointer, her teammates swarmed her, jumping and celebrating.
Taurasi became the first WNBA player to score 10,000 points in her career; she achieved this during the third quarter against Atlanta Dream on Thursday. After the historic three, everyone went wild.
At the start of the game, she needed 18 points to reach 10,000. Taurasi started driving toward her goal with an early 3-pointer, then shortly afterward, she scored a layup.
Taurasi then had eight more points left at halftime.
In the third quarter, she scored another layup on her team’s first possession. Taurasi then shot back-to-back three-pointers, the last 25-footer was the one that put her over 10,000.
Taurasi, a California native who had her start in high school basketball, has been the star of the Phoenix team since she was drafted in 2004. She is the regular scoring leader and still holds that mark in the playoffs. Taurasi has also won three WNBA championships and was the Finals MVP twice.
Taurasi has averaged over 19 points in all of her career, which includes a record of 25.3 points in 2006. She is also over 2,500 points ahead of Tina Thompson, who is second on the scoring list.
Taurasi’s magical moment will go down in history and many will remember that she was the first to score 10,000 points in WNBA.
