A new racing film is currently in production, featuring Formula One drivers and a fictional team named APXGP. Brad Pitt takes on the role of Sonny Hayes, a former racer from the ’90s who resurfaces in the world of Formula One after a mysterious disappearance. Alongside him is Joshua Pearce, portrayed by Damson Idris, forming the APXGP team, which struggles to secure good positions and points on the grid.
The film, which remains untitled, is a collaboration between Apple Studios, Plan B Entertainment, and Jerry Bruckheimer Films. The acclaimed director Joseph Kosinski, known for movies like “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Tron: Legacy,” and “Oblivion,” takes the helm, expressing his admiration for classics such as “Grand Prix” and “Le Mans.”
One of the most captivating aspects of the film is the impressive stunts performed by Brad Pitt himself. Prior to each Formula One race, Pitt would drive a black and gold-tinted Formula 2 car equipped with 15 cameras, providing viewers with an immersive experience. His focus on the racing lines and corners during the driving scenes adds authenticity to the film. The use of techniques from “Top Gun: Maverick” enhances the adrenaline-pumping action of the racing sequences.
Lewis Hamilton, the British driver for Mercedes and a seven-time Formula One world champion, serves as an executive producer, ensuring an authentic portrayal of the sport. Hamilton’s collaboration with Kosinski on camera positions promises to create a breathtaking visual spectacle, making the races appear faster and more exhilarating than ever before.
In preparation for his role, Brad Pitt, despite his age of 59, underwent extensive training in kart racing and open-wheel cars before progressing to Formula 2. His dedication to the role truly showcases his racing skills and commitment to authenticity, making his performance incredibly convincing.
Formula 1’s Chief Executive and President, Stefano Domenicali, expressed his excitement for the film, deeming it an excellent opportunity to showcase the thrilling world of Formula One to a wider audience. By providing unprecedented access to live moments, the film promises to deliver a unique and enthralling experience.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the President of the F.I.A., praised the film’s collaboration with Formula 1, emphasizing that the project would provide an unprecedented level of insight and action, unlike anything seen before in a racing film.
