While soccer is traditionally played by running, a variant of the traditional soccer game called walking soccer is growing in popularity. The trending sport focuses on the health and safety of players. The sport was first launched by the Chesterfield FC Community Trust in Derbyshire, England, as part of an initiative for older adults. Since then, it has become a global phenomenon with around 600 walking football clubs in England alone, and with the sport gaining popularity in countries like Italy, Nigeria, Australia, South Korea, and India.
The rules of walking soccer differ from traditional soccer, as players are not allowed to run or jog – as the name states: walking soccer. Tackling is only allowed with no contact and all free kicks are indirect. Walking soccer is played with six people on each team rather than the traditional 11. These modifications make the sport more accessible to people who may have difficulty with the physical demands of traditional soccer by curbing possible dangers that can injure the knees.
Walking soccer is a much safer alternative to traditional soccer. And for people who are unable to play soccer due to physical incapabilities, walking soccer is an opportunity to play the sport without risking any health problems. Players such as Gary Clark, who played soccer for more than four decades and represented Canada at the international level, had to give up the sport due to a knee replacement surgery. However, he found walking soccer to be a great alternative that has allowed him to continue playing the sport he loves.
Walking soccer not only has physical benefits, but can also improve mental health. Through the collaborative sport, people can come together and socialize with others. Like any sport, walking soccer can improve self efficacy and create a sense of self-empowerment. In a 2022 study, seven men with mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety underwent a walking football intervention. It involved up to an hour playing a game, followed by an opportunity to meet and socialize. The men reported several positive effects on their well-being as they enjoyed socializing and playing the sport.
Walking soccer has become more than just a sport – it has become a community. Many walking soccer clubs organize social events such as cycling trips, visits to local restaurants, and fundraising events for mental health. Players of all ages and abilities are welcome, and the sport is a great way to make new friends and develop a sense of belonging.
