In the extra time of November’s MLS Cup final, Jesus Murillo kicked a weak back pass toward his own goal. The Philadelphia Union’s forward Cory Burke got the ball and only had to score to win the game. LAFC’s goalkeeper, Maxime Crepeau, pounced on the ball, pushing it away and taking down Burke. He saved the game, but fractured his right leg and was carted to the hospital. John McCarthy took his place as goalkeeper for the rest of the game, and the Canadian national team went on to the World Cup without Crepeau.

McCarthy has already recorded career highs in the nine months he has started for LAFC. Crepeau is happy for him.

“I don’t see it as he’s taking my job,” Creeau says. “It’s more we are a crew helping the team lift trophies. I see it more as a collective.”

He had never thought that walking or going up and down stairs would be a big improvement in his mobility.

“Everything happens for a reason. I really play with my heart on the field. I don’t regret anything,” says Crepeau.
