Princess Leia Dress Auction

By: Alan Chen

A dress worn by Princess Leia in Star Wars: A New Hope has gone on auction. The dress was expected to fetch $2 million, with bids closing on Wednesday, but things didn’t necessarily go as planned.

The dress went unsold, because bidders stopped bidding before they got to $1 million, which was the minimum bid allowed, while the last bid was $975,000. “It might be sold in private after the auction,” the bidding company told NPR.

The dress is believed to be the only Princess Leia costume surviving from the film. In Star Wars: a New Hope, the dress is worn when Leia gives medals of honor to two new rebels, Han Solo, and Luke Skywalker.

“The dress is a real relic,” says Brandon Alinger. When fans of the Star Wars franchise see it they gasp because they recognize the significance of the dress. There was only one dress made, and people related to the film thought that it had been destroyed along with the other sets in the film.

A crew member had taken the dress from the burn pile. It was about ten years before they took notice that the dress was still intact, and then the Star Wars fandom found out.

It took eight months to remove all of the dust and patch all the holes in the dress. There’s a good chance that the piece will be used for display collections and not for personal use.
