The white gown worn by Princess Leia from the first blockbuster saga film, New Hope, was auctioned at Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction in London.

The gown was expected to be worth around $2 million. However, the bids closed on Wednesday and the highest bid was only $975,000. Some people thought it was not in mint condition that it had some stains and tears. Other people thought it was not as iconic as Darth Vader’s helmet or Luke’s lightsaber.

Propstore, the company who organized the auction, states that there were post-auction offers for the dress. “It may be sold after the auction in a private-treaty sale, or may be re-offered again in a future auction,” said the company to NPR.

The white gown is strongly believed to be the last surviving piece worn by Princess Leia throughout all if the movies she appeared in. It is the focal point of the mise-en-scene. It is also the last object visible as the final shot transitions to the credit. “The dress is a real relic. It’s an absolute piece of film history,” said Brandon Alinger, the chief officer of Propstore.

Although the auction for the dress failed, there is a good chance that the clothing would be displayed at a museum.
