Original Princess Leia Gown Went Unsold at Auction

By: Selena Zhu

I’ll bet you there isn’t a person in this world who hasn’t heard of Star Wars. Within the franchise, there is a famous character named Princess Leia. A gown worn by Princess Leia in the first film of the new season, A New Hope, was up for sale at this week’s Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction. This popular event sells movie props to vintage item collectors. The seller of the gown thought it would bring in about $2 million.

When the bids closed Wednesday, something unexpected happened. The dress went unsold. The seller’s minimum price was $1 million, and the highest offer was short of the minimum price its owners required to make a sale, with a final bid amount of $975,000. Propstore, the company behind the auction, said it was still actively accepting post auction offers on the dress. “It may be sold after the auction in a private-treaty sale, or may be re-offered again in a future auction,” the company said in a statement to NPR.
