Princess Leia’s Dress, expected to win $2 Million Dollars at an Auction, Failed to Sell

By: Kevin Lee

On June 28th, 2023, at the Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction, instead of auctioning Princess Leia’s dress for $2 million dollars, the dress failed to be auctioned. Due to only have been bid $975,000 dollars, Princess Leia’s dress went unsold, as it didn’t even passed the reserve price.

Princess Leia is an iconic Star Wars character, and her dress is one of the most recognizable relics in the Star Wars memorabilia. According to NPR, “‘When Star Wars fans see it, they stop in their tracks, they gasp a bit at the sight of it,because they recognize the significance of it,’ Alinger(Chief Operating Officer of Propstore, Brandon Alinger) said.”

Sadly, the dress of Princess Leia didn’t even sell half of the expected amount, which was required to even sell the dress.

The origins of this dress dates back to May 25th, 1977, when the original Star Wars movie was released in theaters. It was first shown in the last scene of Star Wars IV, A New Hope.

After the release of the movie, the moviesets, props, clothes, etc. were all destroyed, or so the studio thought. Apparently, a staff member took the dress out of the “burn pile”, according to NPR. The dress was then stored in an attic in London.

The dress was later restored and decided to be auctioned at the Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction, but went unsold. Maybe Princess Leia’s dress wasn’t the chosen one.
