The prop worn by Carrie Fisher, the actress who played Princess Leia, during the movie of Star Wars: A New Hope, was auctioned in the Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction the week of June 29th, 2023.

The dress was expected to be auctioned for at least $2 million but went unsold. The gown had a minimum asking price of $1 million. The bidders of the dress stopped short and ended up bidding 975,000 dollars after the deadline.

Propstore, the company hosting the auction, said they were accepting late bids on the dress on July 5.

“It may be sold after the auction in a private-treaty sale, or may be re-offered again in a future auction,” the company said in a statement to NPR.

The white gown that Princess Leia wore is also an ending prop to the movie. At the film’s conclusion Princess Leia wears the gown while giving out medals to Han Solo and Luke Skywalker, the duo who destroyed the Death Star, the antagonist’s superweapon.

“The dress is a real relic. It’s an absolute piece of film history,” said Brandon Alinger, the chief operating officer of Propstore. “When Star Wars fans see it, they stop in their tracks, they gasp a bit at the sight of it, because they recognize the significance of it,” Alinger said.

There’s a decent chance the piece is destined for a display collection and not for personal wear, given the price point the dress had been expected to sell at.
