What Is Cricket?

By: Katherine Huang

Have you ever wondered what is cricket is? Or the rules of cricket? In this article, you’ll learn what cricket is, where it was created, and how to play.

First, what is cricket? Cricket is a bat-and-ball game. According to the International Cricket Council, “There is a consensus of expert opinion that cricket may have been invented during Saxon or Norman times by children living in the Weald, an area of dense woodlands and clearings in south-east England.” The earliest reference to cricket occurred in Southeast England in the mid-16th century. It spread globally alongside the expansion of the British Empire.

Next, how do you play cricket? The game is played with 2 teams, each with 11 players. The field is oval with a rectangular area in the middle. It’s played on a 22-yard pitch with a wicket on each side. One team is the bowling team, and the other is the field team. The bowling team hits a ball, and the field must hit the ball before it hits the ground or hits the wicket. When 10 batters have been hit, the two teams swap positions. Cricket has 2 umpires or referees.

They communicate with two off-field scorers who record the match’s statistical information.

In conclusion, I talked about what cricket is, where it started, and how to play. Do you play cricket? Are you inspired to start playing?
