Wimbledon l 2022: Novak Djokovic defeats Nick Kyrgios

By: Andrew Cheng

Wimbledon, one of the four grand slam titles and the tournament with the most extended history, has recently hailed a new champion, Novak Djokovic. In the final, Djokovic beat Nick Kyrios by coming back from 1 set down, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

Before the final, Djokovic met Kyrios twice, and surprisingly Kyrios won both times. Novak Djokovic has been considered to have the most orthodox playing style on tour, maintaining consistent groundstrokes and efficient service. Kyrios, on the other hand, has been known as the “bad boy of tennis.” Kyrios is one of a kind regarding his great serve and forehand shot, but he likes to do trick shots like tweener and underhand serve, which is considered an unorthodox move within the sport.

Djokovic has been one of the three goats in tennis history with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Those three players are the most legendary because they have won 20 or more grand slam titles. However, Kyrios has beaten all three of them in his career. His playing style can give the opponent more mental pressure because no one knows when he is going for a total power shot or doing a trick drop shot.

In the final, Kyrios has taken the first set 6-4, which is a close game because the scores show that Kyrios has only broken Djokovic’s serving game once. After the first set, Djokovic started taking advantage of Kyrios’s biggest weakness: his lack of consistency. Djokovic did an outstanding job of dealing with the pressure points and making fewer unforced errors. Still, the most significant part of his game was to stay focused and not get distracted, regardless Kyrios played.
