On Saturday, June 18th, Mexico City set a new Guinness World Record for the most to attend a mass boxing class.

The previous world record was set in 2017 in Moscow with 3,250 attendees. The new record-breaking class on Saturday had 14,299 participants.

According to wbcboxing.com, “To break the Guinness Record, the Massive Class will be continuous, it will not be able to stop. Participants will only be able to take two 20-second breaks to hydrate during the class.” Mexico City’s mass boxing class was led by 15 Mexican boxers, and, according to the same article on wbcboxing.com, over 60 boxing celebrities participated in the record-breaking boxing lesson.

In an ESPN article, reporter Salvador Rodriguez wrote, “Erik “El Terrible” Morales, Andy Ruiz Jr., Oscar Valdez, Jackie Nava, Humberto “Chiquita” González, Miguel Berchelt, Jose “Pipino” Cuevas, Alfonso Zamora, Jose Luis Bueno, Jose Antonio “Jaguar” Aguirre, Ganigan Lopez, Adrian “Confesor” Hernandez, Mariana Juarez, Ana Maria Torres and Alan David Picasso were the instructors in the mega boxing class organized by the Sports Institute (Indeporte) of Mexico City.”

All participants were also given a red, green, or white shirt to represent the colors on the Mexican flag on Mexico City’s Zócalo. Javier Hidalgo Ponce, the director of the Sports Institute of Mexico City, said on June 3rd, “It will be a great multicolored party because together we will form the Mexican flag with these beautiful shirts that each and every one of the participants in the Massive Boxing Class will have.”

This record is another in the long list of Guinness World Records held by Mexico City. In 2018, Mexico City held 217 world records, which was the most out of all Latin American cities. These records include the most people playing foosball at one time (1,080 people), the largest serving of packaged tacos (1,230 kg), and the biggest cup of hot chocolate (2,400 liters).
