On Saturday, June 18, the main square of Mexico City was covered in citizens wearing green, white, and red shirts. This amazing sight is actually a mass boxing class held with a record-breaking number of participants and has become a huge source of pride for Mexico City.
Fifteen current and former Mexican boxers gathered together to teach the class: Erik “El Terrible” Morales, Andy Ruiz Jr., Oscar Valdez, Jackie Nava, Humberto “Chiquita” González, Miguel Berchelt, Jose “Pipino” Cuevas, Alfonso Zamora, Jose Luis Bueno, Jose Antonio “Jaguar” Aguirre, Ganigan Lopez, Adrian “Confesor” Hernandez, Mariana Juarez, Ana Maria Torres and Alan David Picasso.
Gathered at the Zocalo, the main square in Mexico City, according to an article by Salvador Rodriguez, 14,299 committed attendees participated in this massive, record-breaking, 30-minute long sports event organized by the Sports Institute of Mexico City. The Guinness World Record for the largest boxing class in the world was exceeded and beaten by a significant amount in this mass boxing class. The previous world record, held by Moscow, Russia in Red Square, had only 3,250 participants, a small number compared to the 14,299 people who participated in the Mexico City boxing class.
The attendees, in a patriotic act organized by the director of the Sports Institute of Mexico City, Javier Hidalgo Ponce, wore T-shirts with the colors of the Mexican flag. By doing so, they covered the entire square of Zocalo with the colors green, white, and red in an enormous replica of the Mexican flag’s colors and design. Hildago presented the shirts only a few weeks before the boxing class.
“It will be a great multicolored party because together we will form the Mexican flag with these beautiful shirts that each and every one of the participants in the Massive Boxing Class will have,” Hidalgo said on Friday, June 3, in an interview by Salvador Rodriguez.
