Manchester City won a Treble for the first time in their 143-year history on Saturday at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul. The Treble is achieved when a team wins not two but three league championships within one season. This is a rare feat that very few teams have accomplished, but still, Man City snatched it away from other teams. In addition to the Treble and the coveted trophy of the Champions League, this granted them the title of the second English team to win Treble.
In order to win the Champions League, Man City had to beat RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and finally Inter Milan in the knock-out stages. In the Premier League, they beat archrival Manchester United to clinch the trophy with a 2-1 score.
Man City scored four hat-tricks, three by Erling Haaland and one by Phil Foden. The team had three of the league’s top assisters, with 16 made by Kevin De Bruyne, 10 by Riyad Mahrez and eight by Erling Haaland. Ederson also made 11 clean sheets. The team achieved this while only getting 44 yellow cards throughout the tournament.
Haaland received the Premier League player of the month award twice during the season, once in August and again in April. He was also awarded the Premier League youngest player of the season award, the player of the season award and the FWA footballer of the season award. Pep Guardiola won the Premier league manager of the season, all great achievements in one Premier League season.
Achieving the Treble is the cherry on the cake for the team that also has the distinction of having won 3 consecutive Premier League titles, also known as the “three-peat”.
The Football Association (FA) cup final, which is the oldest soccer tournament in the world, was contested by the two Manchester based teams this year, Man City and Man United, making it the first time that the Manchester Derby was contested in a cup final.
Man City continues its domination of soccer in the UK through securing its spot with The Treble. Fans are eagerly awaiting next season.
