Evaluating the Different Styles of Tennis Players

By: Andrew Cheng

In the sport of tennis, players have developed different kinds of playing styles based on their advantage shots and personality. Overall, there are five kinds of playing styles.

The first one is known as an “aggressive baseliner.” This type of player usually stays at the baseline during the point. The players must have excellent skills to hit the ball deep and heavy while also controlling the ball’s direction. The players move from left to right to achieve a point. Although these players are well known for their attack skills, they may make some errors, especially when playing against the following type of player, a counter puncher.

A counter puncher hits consistently and plays defensively in a match. This player is also very good at hitting the ball high and low. They will keep hitting the ball back until their opponent makes a mistake and win a point. It takes a lot of effort and courage to play against this type of player.

The next type of player is called “serve and volleyer.” These players have a unique game style, as they start a game with a big serve and then run forward in front of the net, blocking the ball as soon as it reaches their side. It is a delightful playing style to watch, but it got eliminated this decade because it is not the most efficient way to win a point.

Last but not least is the “all-court player.” This type of player combines all three tennis playing styles. They must feel comfortable attacking on the baseline or at the net and simultaneously perform a fantastic defensive game. These players must make the right decision on everything single shot. The variation of this playing style makes it the most popular playing style on the professional tennis tour.
