Earth is Spinning Faster Than Usual

By: Chloe Sun

Scientists have discovered that Earth is spinning faster more than usual. On June 29th, the earth took a shocking 1.59 seconds less to make the usual 24-hour rotation, breaking the record for the shortest day in modern history.

Scientists say that if the rotation continues to speed up, it may lead to the first ever negative leap second. This means that our clocks will skip one second, which may lead to issues for devices that need to use timers or schedulers. It may also cause problems with IT systems.

But Professor Zoto told timeanddate.com that there is a 70 percent chance that Earth has already reached its maximum speed and there is a low chance we will have to skip a second, but he also said there is no way to know for sure using our current technology.
