India Will Have a Higher Population Than China as the World Population Reaches Eight Billion

The world population will reach eight billion people by the end of this year. India will also have more people than China, says the United Nations.

The secretary of the UN, Antonio Guterres, said that the goal of hitting eight billion people is expected to be reached by November 15.

“This is an occasion to celebrate our diversity, recognize our common humanity, and marvel at advancements in health that have extended lifespans and dramatically reduced maternal and child mortality rates,” says Guterres.

A report from the World Population Prospects 2022 says that women have birthed fewer babies since 1950, due to plummeting birth rates.

Women’s birth rates have fallen from five babies per woman in 1950 to about 2.3 babies today. The rate is expected to drop down to 2.1 babies by 2050, and it could be even earlier.

The UN said that the world population might touch 8.5 billion people by 2030, 9.7 billion by 2050, and even 10.4 billion people by 2090, and stay there until 2100.

A UN report said that about half (or more) of the population rise will come from eight countries: Egypt, India, Pakistan, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and the Philippines.

Australia is also likely to gain people. It’s in a group of countries that will also gain a lot of people in the coming decades. More countries in this group include the US, New Zealand, and Canada. They will also be a good home for a lot of coming migrants.
