On July 24, 2022, the northeast states endured peak summer temperatures. Places like Newark hit 101 degrees at 3 pm exceeding the previous daily record by 3 degrees according to the National Weather Service.
It was the fifth consecutive day in Newark of temperatures at or above 100 degrees. In Boston, it hit 100 degrees surpassing their previous record of 98. Many other cities have also broken their record.
There is even a reported case of death due to the extreme weather. Officials have been talking about the heat almost every day now. The Boston Triathlon has been postponed to August 21 because of massive heat waves. Makeshift cooling centers were constructed and cases of heat exhaustion keep being reported.
Approximately, 71 million people were in areas of dangerous heat on Sunday, July 24. The heat index was 103 degrees. The heat index is a measure of how hot it feels outside, considering humidity and temperature.
This Monday looks to be better but still very hot in parts of the northeast. On Saturday a heat-related death was confirmed; this person died because of hypertensive cardiovascular disease and emphysema.
On Thursday, in Texas, Dallas County, the first heat-related death of 2022 was reported. In Arizona, they have found 25 heat-related deaths between July 17 and July 23 and 29 other cases in 2022. There have been deaths involving dehydration. People have also been worried about how this extreme heat may overwhelm power grids.
“You can hit the beach or head to the pool to keep cool, too!” the Philadelphia said on Twitter. Philadelphia declared a heat emergency on Thursday that remains in effect.
