On July 1, Minions: The Rise of Gru was released in theaters. Groups of teenagers filmed themselves entering theaters to see this movie while wearing full suits, sunglasses, and carrying themselves with an aura of businessmen.
They posted these videos on social media platforms like TikTok with the #gentleminions. Now, #gentleminions is a full-fledged trend and these videos have gained 65.4 million views.
The Rise of Gru earned 164 million dollars in the first week. A video of 20 teenagers dressed in suits in line at a Singapore theater, riding on a escalator and requesting 22 tickets for The Rise of Gru received nearly 170,000 likes. “After we finished the movie, we went out and we were going down the escalator,” said Joshua Law, an 18-year-old student. “And then we saw this bunch going up the escalator, and we sort of met halfway.” “Doing these types of things, you actually get a lot of stares,” said Devan Rajen, another 18-year-old student pictured in the video who posted the video from his own TikTok account. “People probably thought we were humiliating ourselves.” These teenagers have rarely met before but because of internet trend they became good friends.
