On July 9, 2022, Chile beat the United States in a Men’s Rugby World Cup qualifier, 31-29. This comeback gave Chile a ticket to the Rugby World Cup, which will be held in France in 2023.
The game against the U.S had an outstanding outcome for Chile, and made its name bigger than ever. Santiago Videla got won a penalty in the 75th minute. This put Chile ahead, and Videla was their MVP player.
Chile will be in Pool D of the World Cup in France, along with England, Argentina, Japan and Samoa. The U.S has only failed to reach one World Cup, and they still have a great chance to qualify. Later this year, the U.S will face the third-place team from the Rugby Europe Championships for a chance to compete in France.
“It really means so much… the sacrifices that this team has done. There were times when it seemed like it was uphill,” Chile captain Martin Sigren said. “I want to thank all the families who came here. They were the ones who kept us pushing.”
