The skeleton of a Gorgosaurus will be up for auction and is expected
to sell at a price between $5 million and $8 million.
The 3-meter tall, 6.7-meter long skeleton will be under the hammer in
New York on July 28th, 2022.
Sotheby’s auction house described the Gorgosaurus skeleton as
“one dinosaur that is the most money to ever appear in the market.”
When it is an adult, it weighs about 2 tonnes, or slightly smaller than
the T-rex.
Paleontologists say that the Gorgosaurus was fiercer and faster than
the T-rex, with a stronger bite force of about 42,000 newton
compared to the 35,000 newton bite force of a T-rex.
The skeleton was found in Judith River Formation, near Havre,
Montana of US in 2018. It lived 77 million years ago. Another dinosaur
called “Sue”, a T-rex was sold in 1997 for $8.36 million.
Even if the Gorgosaurus sells at its top price of $8 million, it will still
be cheaper compared to the T-rex, nicknamed “Stan”, which was
sold for a whopping $31.8 million in 2020.
