Living With Covid

Living With Covid

By: Derek Chang

Have you ever been infected with Covid-19? Has your family been infected with Covid before? Currently, my entire family: my mom, my dad, and my little brother all have Covid. I’m the only person who doesn’t. Social distance is very tough right now.

It all started last week when I was having a one-day-sleepover at my friend Aakash’s house. Everything seemed fine when we went there on Friday. However, on Saturday, I received news that my mom and my brother had Covid. My dad didn’t have Covid at the time. After hearing the news, Aakash kept pleading to his family for me to stay at their house until my family was well. His parents said no.

After I got home, my dad told me the plan. The upstairs was the contaminated area in our house, and we had to stay downstairs unless we really had to go up. If we had to go up, or if my brother or my mom came downstairs, we would wear a mask. We even slept downstairs. Things were going to get a lot worse.

On Sunday, there was more bad news. My dad had Covid. It could be that the first time he tested, he got a false negative, or that he got Covid from helping my mom so many times. No matter what, he had to go upstairs. Luckily, when I tested, I was negative.

Then, on Monday, my little brother insisted on going downstairs after he saw me downstairs. My parents agreed that they couldn’t just stay upstairs forever. My mom set up a little table in the garage, and I had to go there. The upstairs became very contaminated and the downstairs became a little contaminated. The yard and garage were uncontaminated. That evening, my mom and I set up a tent in the garage.

This is the current routine: I would stay in the garage or yard the whole day, unless I have to do something inside the house, like going to the bathroom. When my parents needed something from inside the garage, they would either ask me to put it in the yard on the cooler, or they could just come in and grab it.

My little brother is feeling much better right now. I just found out that my brother’s neighbors who are a friend of his also have Covid.

A family getting Covid is definitely a bad thing. I hope my family can get better soon.
