Masks, Although Not Ideal, Are Necessary to Reduce the Spread

By: Rhea Agrawal

Dear Editor,

As the number of coronavirus cases continues to rise, opinions clash across the United States about whether it should be mandatory to wear a face mask. At the start of the pandemic, people were advised against wearing masks as it was necessary for frontline workers to be able to have enough materials. However, now the use of masks is required in places all over the world as the virus is spread by droplets, and the use of face masks or coverings will decrease the chance of an infected person passing the virus to a healthy person. Although wearing masks is not ideal, many believe that it is necessary to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. Be that as it may, in the U.S., many Southern states are not requiring citizens to wear a mask. In Texas, government officials of the same party (Republican) are arguing over the use of face masks. Even though President Trump has not ordered a mask mandate for all citizens, government officials, especially those in the south, should urge their citizens to wear face coverings for the benefit of themselves and the people around them. Wearing a face mask is the best way to lessen the spread of the virus and is beneficial overall. It is compulsory for everyone to wear a mask when out and about if there is to be any chance of returning to normal and being done with COVID-19 for once and for all.
