The Soldiers Ambushing the Ambushers Get Ambushed

By: Ray Zhao

Jonathan was having a bad day. A very, very, bad day. First, news of defeat from his favorite army had been complemented by news of defeat from the vital right wing of his forces, which held the high ground and the only mountain pass to the capital. And just as he had finished lunch, measly rations of meat and biscuits, news of an enemy advance directly into the center of the line was heralded into the camp.

It had been a long time since Jonathan was this close to combat. And yet, here he was, readying troops for battle on a hot summer day. His troops were slow to assume battle formation, but as soon as they did, Jonathan rode to the back of the line with a group of soldiers. He had a plan.

On a ridge half a mile away, Jonathan’s mortal enemy, General Askmini, had surveyed the position of his troops and his enemies. The valley Jonathan’s troops were in was surrounded by a high ridge. Askmini knew that Jonathan would set a trap there. And sure enough, his generals had reported seeing glints of steel and banners atop the ridge.

Askmini knew this was his chance. If he could encircle the forces on the ridge, it would be a turkey shoot and he would win the day easily. So, without giving it a second though, he rode forward with his most trusted troops to creep behind the ambushers.

Closing in on the ridge, Askmini decided to order the attack. Screams and howls began to emanate from both sides. But it seemed that Jonathan’s troops weren’t surprised. Wait…

Just then, movement behind him revealed the larger part of Jonathan’s army. Knowing what Askmini would think, Jonathan had set a trap for the trap-hunters, and now the tables had been turned. Surrounded on both sides by fierce enemy troops, Askmini had no choice but to surrender, giving another victory to Jonathan.
