Wishes

By: Jessie Sha

I was sitting in the grass, tall blades hiding me from the little girl — the little girl who I was supposed to grant a wish for.

“Hey Flora! Check this out!” Adler, my partner yelled from a clump of grass to my left. I walked over to see what was going on. I had only taken a few steps when Adler, and what Adler had found, came into sight.

“That’s the note that tells us the wish!” I exclaimed, flying towards the huge slip of paper. “Almost there! This mission is too easy!”

“Hey! Look at this pretty butterfly!” A little boy hollered. My wings stopped beating, stopping me in my tracks; they had seen me.

“Adler, a little help!” I whispered, trying to look like a butterfly, as I floated around over flowers.

“Distract them!” Adler said, pulling at the corner of the note.

“Let’s catch it!” A little girl shouted, running toward a house. I looked at Adler, for a sign of help. He stepped backwards into some bushes, motioning “3,2,1, fly!” as he disappeared into safety. I flew as far as I could, before the kids could stomp me with their big feet and indelicate hands. I rushed towards Adler’s hiding spot, trying to find a spot to hide.

“Over here!” Adler yelled. I crashed into the bush, and stood there, waiting breathlessly. “Wait! We left the note! That’s our only ticket out of this horrid place.” I shivered, even though it was extra sunny. “I hate wishes. Why do I have to do all the wish missions!”

“Flora, Flora, Flora!”

“Hmm? Oh, hey Adler. Wait, Adler, we need to go back.”

“We can’t, it’s too dangerous.”

“We have to, otherwise we will be shamed, and might not even be able to stay.”

“Fine, but make it quick.” I nodded, climbing slowly out of the bush.

“I need some magic spray!” Adler tossed me the bottle of the magic spray that only hid from humans. I sprayed myself quickly, hoping it would be enough to make me invisible. I fluttered over to the paper, trying to drag it to the safety of the bush. “If only I brought the spray with me, then it wouldn’t be so obvious.” I motioned Adler to throw me the spray, but he was too late.

“Hey look! It’s magic! The paper is moving on its own!” The same little boy yelled. “This one is quite observant. Definitely not the best for a mission where I’m supposed to not get noticed!” I scrambled quickly towards Adler, as the kids started to follow and block my path.

“Quick in here!” Someone whispered so I could hear. I ran towards that sound and disappeared into darkness as I kept walking forward. I scanned my surroundings as a candle was lit.

“Wh-what is this place?” I asked, cold shivers running down my back.

“This? Oh, this is my hiding place, from those kids.”

“Why are you here? You’re a fairy, you should be back at home with everyone else.”

“I was on my way, but now, I can’t go back. They banished me from the Enchanted Forest.”

“Why?”

“Because I couldn’t grant someone’s wish. I just wish I could finish the mission, because they made me feel so free. Now, I’m stuck. Wait, that note your hold, can I see it?”

“Sure.” The mysterious fairy studied it carefully, looking at it.

“This is the note that I was supposed to find!”

“No, no it’s not.”

“Flora, Flora, Flora!” I opened my eyes and stretched.

“Hmm?”

“You ready to start our mission?”

“Yeah, yeah…” “So, it was all a dream? Well, let’s hope that this mission is better than my dream.”
