‘Inside Out 2’ Fights Against Anxiety

By: Cindy Pu

On June 14, ‘Inside Out 2’ was released. This sequel once again takes place in the mind of Riley, where all her emotions are organized by a colorful collection of characters. The original group of emotions Joy, Anger, Fear, Sadness, and Disgust, once again appear in this sequel, but a group of new emotions also arrive. Anxiety (voiced by Maya Hawke) and her group of emotions try to change Riley by taking over her mind.

The director Kelsey Mann narrates a scene from his film, when Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler) pits against Anxiety (voiced by Maya Hawke) in a battle to prevent a young girl’s thoughts from being taken over by Anxiety.

In the scene Anxiety is directing a room full of mind workers that use animation boards to draw projections on everything that could go wrong in Riley’s life the next day. Anxiety sends those negative projections to Riley’s mind, causing her to toss and turn in her sleep.

On these scene, Kelsey Mann said, “I always envisioned this being a movie about anxiety taking over and was reflecting on my own life and how my anxiety does that in me.”

As things start to get overwhelming for the emotions Joy, Anger, Fear, Sadness, and Disgust, Joy starts drawing positive projections and sending them to Riley’s mind to make her feel better. Joy eventually gets the mind workers to revolt against Anxiety.
