2024 Presidential Debate

By: Eva Huang

Last Thursday, June 27th, Joe Biden faced Donald Trump in the presidential debate, and many citizens were concerned. Joe Biden, our current president, was also Barack Obama’s vice president from 2008 to 2016. On the other hand, Donald Trump, the 45th president of the United States, was in the presidential office from 2016 to 2020.

Citizens were concerned about President Biden’s age. During the debate, the 81-year-old took long breaks between phrases and fumbled over words and sentences. Donald Trump appeared very confident throughout the debate, and used President Biden’s rambling as an advantage. He made some false and unsupported claims, but President Biden couldn’t catch on.

The debate brought up many issues, such as the US’s economy and immigration. While they were talking about the economy, Trump used his time to blame President Biden for the recent economy. According to the BBC, “Mr Trump, who was the US president before Biden, repeatedly attacked his opponent on the economy, claiming the US had the greatest economy under his leadership.”

President Biden mainly pointed out Trump’s criminal conviction. In the US’s history, Trump is the first former president to be convicted of a crime. “He was accused of hiding payments made to a woman he’s alleged to have had in a relationship with while he was married, so that she would keep quiet about it as he ran for president in 2016.”

At the end of the debate, many Democrats were worried about President Biden but, Kamala Harris, his vice president, defended him by telling reporters that it “was a slow start, but there was a strong finish.”
