For the First Time in 6 Years, Homelessness Drops in Los Angeles

By: Nelson Zhang

Los Angeles citizens, having grown frustrated by the numbers of homeless people wherever they look, now have hope that Mayor Karen Bass can fix the situation. The mayor moved homeless people off the streets into motels as soon as she took office in 2022. Sidewalks that were filled with tents, trash, and blankets were officially cleared.

Even though the mayor wanted to start a program to get the homeless people off the streets, she warned that more homeless people could still show up on the streets of Los Angeles before it seemed like she had done something to help the homeless people. Recently, Ms. Bass and her allies have received their best news yetA major validation: For the first time in 6 years, the count of homeless people went down according to the New York Times. Los Angeles, the nation’s second largest city, has seen homelessness decrease by 2.2% while tents off the sidewalks or in cars have decreased by a shocking 10.4%.

Homelessness was considered the largest concern according to the voters on the West Coast. They didn’t know how to fix this huge problem so homeless people could have a roof over their heads or to get them a permanent home. The state of California has a housing shortage and because of this, it leads to many people on the streets.

Hours later, Los Angeles Supreme court upheld a new law stating that people are banned sleeping in public areas of Los Angeles. But the mayor progressively moved homeless people indoors into motels showing that when the Los Angeles police arrested people because of sleeping on the street, the arrests were a wrong, and forceful response. Because of this Mayor Bass’s kind initiatives, less people have been to jail and more people are off the streets.
