3 boys found the bones of a teenage T-Rex

By: Wesley Zhao

On July, 31,2022, Jennis Fisher , Liam Fisher and their cousin Kaiden Madsen went fossil hunting in the Hell Creek Formation in the North Dakota Badlands. The area is known for ton of dinosaur bones so the boys hoped to find some,

But to their surprise, they found something even rarer. A young T. rex skeleton. Only a few have ever been found. When they were searching, they found a long, gray bone sticking out of the ground. “Dad asked, ‘What is this?’ and Jessin said, ‘That’s a dinosaur.’” (DOGOnews,2022)

They sent a picture of the bones to a paleontologist and they confirmed that it was a dinosaur bone. At first, he thought it was of a duckbill dinosaur but after some digging, they found teeth attached to the jaw.

It was encased in 6000 pounds of sandstone and took 11 days to excavate. The fossil included the dinosaur’s lower legs, hips, pelvis, tail vertebrate, and most of its skull. The researchers estimate that it was 25 feet long and 10 feet tall. It probably weighted 3500 pounds and was around thirteen to fifteen years old.

It was a young dinosaur which was important to researchers because it is allowing them to discover details about how the T. Rex lived and what it was like .We don’t know a lot about them yet because of how rare the bones are.
