The homeless percentage in LA has dropped for the first time in 6 years. Changes started when the mayor, Karen Bass and her program, Inside Safe, moved homeless people into motel rooms in 2022.

Piles of belongings and tents from homeless populations have diminished as Mayor Bass’ program goes into effect. Finally, on Friday, Inside Safe made a major accomplishment; the homeless count has decreased. The overall number of homeless people decreased by 2.2%, while other people that live in tents or cars decreased by 10.4%.

Homelessness is a huge concern in California, because it has a housing shortage. But Los Angeles leaders have been successful moving people outdoors indoors.

The Supreme Court had issued a ruling that it would be easier for local governments to ban sleeping in public. “We know for a fact it will not work,” Mayor Bass said. “It will not get people housed. It will not get people off our streets.”

Now, most homeless people in L.A are living in shelters rather than the streets.

Inside Safe is helping homeless people. The program has made significant progress in moving homeless people off of the streets.
