England Dealing with Negativity from Fans, Despite Recent Win

By: Jingwei Zhao

Despite England finishing top of their group in the European Championship 2024, their fans booed their performance after a 0-0 draw against Slovenia. Yet, the English team had no pressure coming into the match, as they were already set to make the knockout stages even if they lost.

Still, fans were upset with the results. England’s manager Gareth Southgate says he understands some of their concerns. However, looking at the situation from a player’s perspective, Southgate says he’s “very proud” for how his players are handing with the criticism.

However, England’s future in the tournament is looking bright. They beat Slovakia in a 2-1 match for the knockout stage and will now face Switzerland in the quarter-finals. According to statistics from the Union of European Football Associations, England has more possession than their opponents, with 60% to 48%. They also have more attacks, a higher passing accuracy, less yellow cards, and less offsides. With all these aspects that outmatch Switzerland, the game is looking hopeful for them.

Still, Switzerland is a strong team, so the match should be intense. If England wins, they will either face the Netherlands or Türkiye in the semi-finals. However, they first have to beat Switzerland on Saturday, July 6th.
