Para-climbing to Debut at 2028 Los Angeles Paralympic Games

In a landmark decision, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has announced that Para-climbing will join the lineup of sports at the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles, USA. This addition marks a significant expansion, bringing the total number of sports featured at the LA28 Paralympics to 23.

The move follows the successful introduction of climbing at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, signaling a growing interest and inclusivity in the sport across both Olympic and Paralympic platforms. Andrew Parsons, President of the IPC, expressed confidence that Para-climbing’s dynamic nature will attract diverse audiences to the Paralympic Games, much like its impact on the Olympics.

“Para-climbing is a fast-paced, exhilarating sport that I am sure will attract new audiences to the Paralympic Games,” said Parsons.

The process of introducing a new sport to the Paralympic Games involves careful evaluation by the organizing committee of each respective event, followed by approval from the IPC. For LA28, the choice came down to Para-climbing or Para-surfing, both of which had not previously featured in the Paralympics.

Marco Scolaris, President of the International Federation of Sport Climbing, expressed gratitude to the IPC and the LA28 organizing committee for embracing Para-climbing. “By proposing climbing as an additional sport, they have given us another opportunity to fulfill our purpose – to make the world a better place through climbing,” said Scolaris, highlighting the sport’s ability to inspire and unite athletes on a global stage.

Para-climbing’s inclusion marks the fifth new sport added to the Paralympic program in the last 12 years, underscoring a commitment to innovation and diversity within the Games. The decision by the LA28 team to advocate for Para-climbing sets a precedent as the first organizing committee to request an additional sport at the Paralympics.

As preparations for the 2028 Paralympic Games gain momentum, anticipation builds for the debut of Para-climbing, promising thrilling competition and inspiring stories of athletic achievement on the world stage.
