Hurricane Beryl Strikes Texas

By: Nelson Zhang

The mayor of Texas, John Whitmire has urged all residents in Texas to remain indoors until Hurricane Berly left Texas. At least 2 people have died because of trees falling from the strong winds and pounding rain.

As of July 8, 2024, Texas is getting beaten by Hurricane Berly causing over 2 million residents in Texas to lose power. This hurricane is flooding the streets and striking trees down that block a lot of roads and fall on houses. Many fences and house rooftops have been damaged severely and the National Weather Service urged residents in Texas to stay indoors.

Furthermore, Houston’s major airports and small airports in Harris Country, Galveston, and Dallas have been closed due to the hurricane. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, these airports will re-open when the hurricane and rain calms down. As many trees fall, one enormous tree fell on top of the “Yard of the Month” in Sugar Land, Texas damaging the home and the yard of one resident. The roads have been severely littered because of the trees and winds causing the lines and electricity to cut off. The residents in the Houston area have yet to get their power back and cell services to come back.

Houston is still experiencing strong gusts of winds and heavy rainfall. Mayor John Whitmire advised residents to take this as a tornado and stay indoors at all costs. The county’s flood warning system warned residents especially in downtown Texas to stay off the roads.
