Hurricane Beryl Strikes Houston, Texas

By: Bowen Wang

Do you know what a hurricane is? A hurricane is also known as a tropical cyclone. They can reach speeds up to 95 miles/hour. Currently, one called Hurricane Beryl, is crashing into Texas.

Hurricanes can cause power failures. In Texas, millions are left without electricity. Many of these people are located between the Gulf of Mexico and Houston.

Near these towns, there are frogs. This time is currently the frog’s mating season. One particularly strange thing noticed about this is that the frogs’ usually only let out their mating cries at night but recently, they have been heard calling in the middle of the day which is very strange.

A few deaths have been recorded. Many of these deaths occurred because of Beryl’s strong winds, which can knock down trees that fall into houses, crushing people inside of them.

Many restaurants closed due to power outages. In Galveston, a small town near Galveston Beach, Robert’s LaFitte bar is still open. Scott Butler, the owner, reports that the bar is also in a power outage, but there are still drinks. The bar was also one of the first to recover after a previous hurricane, Hurricane Ike.

The winds are still strong but the rain in small towns like Galveston has slowed down, now coming down in squalls. Most of the damage is occurring in eastern Texas, but parts of the hurricane are landing in southwestern Louisiana.

“We’re going to take care of every community. No community is favored over another community. Every Houstonian is important to us. We’ll get your power on as quickly as possible,” Mayor John Whitmire, of Houston, said.
