Nobara’s Straw Doll Technique Explained

By: Ivan Wang

Have you ever wondered how effective voodoo dolls would be in an actual fight, or how you would be able to deploy them effectively? Well, in Jujutsu Kaisen, they answer this question with Nobara’s Straw Doll technique, which I’m here to explain.

Her straw doll technique is an inherited technique, as her grandmother also used the technique and passed it down to her.

There are 3 tools required to properly use the cursed technique: nails, a hammer, and a straw doll. However, the straw doll technique is replaceable.

The first of the three applications of the technique is pretty simple. She simply imbues her nails with cursed energy, then throws them. Due to the nature of her attacks, she fights at mid to long range.

The second application of the technique is an extension of the first and it’s called hairpin. It is again relatively simple, as all it does is detonate the nails that have been imbued with cursed energy. However, these nails are much more powerful than her normal attacking power. The explosions can also be delayed for strategic use. The only problem with the first two uses of the straw doll technique is that she needs to actually be able to hit the opponent, which means that if she can’t hit them, the technique becomes pretty useless.

That is, unless the final application didn’t exist. The final usage of the technique is called resonance. Resonance is a lot more powerful than the last two, but it has a lot more conditions. Essentially, resonance creates a voodoo-like connection between Nobara and the chosen subject. Through this connection, she can attack the subject without actually having to get physical. However, like I said before, it has more conditions than the last two uses of this technique. The conditions are that she must get a piece of her opponent and connect it to either a straw doll or her own body. There’s currently no confirmed maximum distance to this ability. The most shocking thing about this ability is that it was able to damage Mahito, the disaster cursed spirit. Why is this shocking? Well, because Mahito can only be damaged through his soul, which is what Nobara did with resonance. This means that resonance can actually affect the soul of the chosen subject.

That is all of the currently known uses of the straw doll cursed technique and all you need to know about it.
