Nigerian Artwork: Could it set a new World Record?

By: Ellie Zhang 1

An artist and doctor in Nigeria, Fola David, made history by setting a new Guinness World Record of the largest drawing produced by an individual.

The artwork was said to be a whopping 11,000 square feet, topping Ravi Soni, the previous recorder who had only a 6,781 square foot artwork.

Fola David’s art, titled “Unity and Diversity,” showcases the diverse ethnic groups of Nigeria through their unique culture, language, attire, etc.
The artwork shows two hands holding a map of Nigeria.

Nigeria is Africa’s most heavily populated country, made up of about 250 ethnic groups.

“Our diversity should be seen as something that unites us, as something that strengthens us, rather than something that should create that divide between us,” David said on BBC after completing his work on Sunday night.

The significance of his achievement is far more than just a piece of art. By setting this record, he has placed Nigerian art on the global stage, showcasing the country’s rich culture. David’s artwork also serves as an inspiration to people across Africa, demonstrating the power of dedication and talent.

His accomplishment reached and impressed several people, including Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, and a former Guinness World Record holder, Hilda Baci.

In an Instagram video, David said, “Hi guys, I am so happy to say that we have broken the current record, and all we have to do now is set a new one.”
