Protesting Problem In UK

By: Jessica Sun

There have been many protests around the UK, the United Kingdom, over the last week like in Rotherham, Bolton, Liverpool, etc.

Some said the protests were organized by far-right groups, and have been held in many cities and towns the last five days.

Some of the protest became violent with people throwing bottles, damaging shops, and attacking police officers.

Not everyone that protested were from far-right groups. Far-right groups’ causes are often linked to race, national identity, and immigration.

Anti-racism demonstrators have also gathered in some cities.

Downing Street has confirmed there will be a meeting on Monday- ( today) about the problem. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has promised to give the police the government’s full support to take action against extremists.

The government minister who is in charge of the police, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, said “Criminal violence and disorder has no place on Britain’s streets.”

She also added that it’s necessary that communities feel safe on the streets.

In a meeting of government ministers on Saturday, one of Sir Keir Starmer’s spokesperson said the PM told those gathered that “The right to freedom of expression and the violent disorder we have seen are two very different things”. He added: “ There is no excuse for violence of any kind and reiterated that the government backs the police to take all necessary action to keep our streets safe”

There have been many protests before, in San Francisco to protest contested election results, there are protests in Los Angeles, etc.
