Tom Daley finally retires after 15 years of diving

By: Wesley Zhao

The British diver, Tom Daley, who won his 5th Olympic medal at the 2024 Olympics, announced that he will be retiring.

The 30-year-old diver qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics when he was only 14 and has competed in every single one since. In 2021, he won his first gold medal.

“It feels very, very surreal,” he said about his retirement.

Before retiring, Daley was able to get a silver in the 10-meter synchro event with his partner Noah Williams. Daley said that there was a lot of pressure and expectations, and that when he walked out, he saw his husband, kids, friends, and family in the audience.

He also got emotional at the end, knowing that it was going to be his last competitive dive. Besides winning 5 Olympic medals, he has won many titles across the European and World competitions. He has won 3 bronze medals in London 2012, Rio 2016, and Tokyo 2020. He also won gold in the 2020 games with Matty Lee, and now completed the colors by winning silver in the Paris 2024 Olympics. Although it would have been crazy to see him win a medal at 14 years old, he won it when he was 18 years old, which is still an amazing feat.

Besides being amazing at diving, he is also amazing at knitting. He inspired lots of people to try it after posting his creations on social platforms. He even posted a Paris Olympic Games themed sweater.
