A fire erupted aboard a boat in Long Beach, California, killing two and injuring three. The fire unexpectedly began near a dock around 5:17 p.m. on Saturday. The initial cause of the fire is unknown and is still being investigated by officials.
When the boat caught fire, clouds of black smoke were emitted into the air, causing passerby and spectators to alert the fire department immediately. The smoke was reported to be visible from miles away and caused a great ruckus. Daniel Quinn, a worker at a nearby restaurant, says that it “sounded like someone landed on the roof.”
Officials are putting in their best effort to reduce the environmental impact of the burning boat, such as oil leaks and the release of toxic fumes into the air. The boat is now confirmed to be partially underwater, making it harder to remove. Long Beach officials report that they will be giving further updates on the matter.
