Ban on TikTok? Wise choice?

By: Harrison Chang

The usage of electronic devices is very popular nowadays. Although the usage of Facebook, Instagram, and many other apps is also very popular, Tiktok has grown rapidly in the past few years.

TikTok is an app that is similar to Youtube since they both play videos. However, they are different in many ways too. For example, TikTok plays short videos, whereas Youtube plays longer videos with more advertisements that aren’t skippable.

Till now, we have only talked about Tiktok’s pros; now let’s talk about its cons. TikTok has not done very well managing its videos. Some of the videos on the platform are shameless and even violent. These types of videos can cause psychological discomfort for kids. Politics can also cause it to be banned.

To avoid these problems, in Texas and other 20 states, TikTok has been banned. “Its ties to the Chinese government resulted in an executive order, earlier this year,” said Texas Governor Greg Abbott. Soon after it was banned, the public and some researchers who study how TikTok is used by teenagers became upset and held protests against banning Tiktok in their states. They claimed that they need TikTok for their career and income. They want the government to unban the app and restore their career.

Although banning TikTok seems like a wise action, some of these states’ citizens don’t want this to happen because TikTok is their career and how they earn money.
