A Very Short Rebellion in Russia

By: Lin Jiayi

On June 23, the Wagner group, a military group paid to work with Russia, threatened to attack the country. On June 24, Wagner and Russia reached an agreement to work together again, but the rebellion left President Putin aghast and Russia weaker.

When President Putin first began the war on Ukraine, he was only using Russia’s own soldiers. Soon, the Wagner Group, led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, also joined the fight. Wagner was first identified in 2014, when it started backing pro-Russian separatist forces in eastern Ukraine. It is thought to have helped Russia annex Crimea in the same year. Wagner forces have also been active in Africa and the Middle East. Prigozhin spent some time in jail in the past and had always sided with Russia during the war, but went against Russia because his troops were not given enough supplies.

The Wagner Group has helped Ukraine a lot in the war and has made Russia weaker. Putin has led Russia for nearly 24 years, and was seen as someone who could never be challenged.

CNBC reports, “Putin might be seen as a ‘mad dictator’ — but he has built powerful barriers to prevent a coup.”

The rebellion was short, but it showed Putin is struggling for control, forgiving people who attacked him, and asking a leader that doesn’t belong in Russia to help solve his problems.
