Patriots Day Is Special in Boston

By: Johnn Jin

The third Monday of April is a special day for the people of Boston. It’s the day when they commemorate the Patriots in the Revolutionary War. It is also Marathon Monday, the day of the Boston Marathon. The race, held since 1897, attracts some of the fastest long-distance runners in the world, like world record-holder Eliud Kipchoge.

The marathon isn’t the only event spectators come for on this day. At 11:00 am on Marathon Monday the Red Sox always play a game, the earliest game of the MLB season. That is a special game for Red Sox fans to watch. Recently the Red Sox played Angels, but after the second inning, it started to rain hard for an hour. Usually, everyone would leave, but this was Marathon Monday so no one moved. After the delay, the game continued and Red Sox reliever Kutter Crawford went on a tear throwing 6.1 scoreless innings. But the Red Sox still struggled after losing 5-4. These past 10 years the Red Sox have finished last in their division 4 times and won three times. Their bad luck spread during the off-season.

On Marathon Monday this year there were almost 35,000 people. The yellow-and-blue jerseys became a good luck charm for the Red Sox, as they are 17–4 when wearing them. The number 13 on the jersey forms a B for Boston. Kids get the day off school to have a chance to watch the marathon and the Red Sox play. To celebrate Patriots’ Day Boston hosts one of the most difficult races: the Boston marathon.
