By: Chiyan Loo

Every day, migrants in NYC are being abused. According to KQED, it’s a policy [Could you explain more explicitly what the policy is? Right now, it’s unclear.] that is increasingly concerning to advocates. While places like Albany, a sanctuary city, have welcomed new arrivals, many localities have expressed hostility towards immigrants.

Johnson Coronel says he noticed “Help Wanted” signs, and sometimes he and his friends would go into these stores to ask for work. However, they are told no one speaks Spanish or they are asked for a work permit, which no one has yet and it could take two years to get one.

Anthony Gerome says he feels compassion for people asking for asylum in his area but, he says people in this town did not sign up to take on and take care of asylum seekers.

“I’ve always overheard people talk badly about Hispanics,” Efren Rojas says. “No matter where you come from, your family can be here for hundreds of years, they will still see you as from another country. You’re Your skin is a little dark, and you will make people uncomfortable.”

Throughout New York, organizations like the Capitol District Latinos and Albany Victory Gardens have been trying to help out immigrants. They offer food, English classes, and clothing.

However, these organizations need funding.
