When Vin Scully died on Tuesday at age 94, millions of fans were overwhelmed with sadness. He was honest, credible, and idolized.
Vin Scully was a legendary baseball broadcaster for the Dodgers. He was known for his gentle voice, broadcasting over 97 seasons and 6 decades and never making anyone in the crowd groan.
Vin’s final broadcast for the Dodgers was in 2016, and his parting words to his fans were, “I have said enough for a lifetime, and for the last time, I wish you all a very pleasant good afternoon.”
Vin never said more than what had to be said and always commented directly in the moment. Often, he would pause, letting the audience cheers echo throughout the stadium. One time, he even paused for over a whole minute.
Vin’s plain honesty was the reason why everyone loved him. He was humble, never gossiped, and was straight to the point.
His retiring speech ended with, “You and I have been friends for a long time. But I know in my heart that I’ve always needed you more than you’ve ever needed me. God give you for every storm, a rainbow. For every tear, a smile. For every care, a promise, and a blessing in each trial. For every problem life sends, a faithful friend to share.”
