Vin Scully Dies at 94, His Legacy Remembered

By: Bryan Li

Vin Scully was a commentator for the Dodgers baseball team, and every night he gave an honest report of the game. On August 2nd, 2022, he died at age 94.

Scully was a man of rare qualities. The Washington Post said he was an honest, trustworthy and humble man who told the truth and never boasted about his achievements. For 67 years, he gave reports of what happened each game, reinforcing baseball’s reputation as the “only game you can see on the radio.”

His voice was perhaps why everyone who listened to him loved him so much. The Washington Post said that his voice was smooth, gentle, and purely improvisational. He had the ability to describe any event in his own words, without any preparation, and fully express all the feelings and emotions going around during the game.

Scully was a completely honest storyteller. He told events exactly how they happened and did not show bias towards the Dodgers or any other team even if he liked them more than the others. Some teams, according to The Washington Post, did not share his view on being unbiased. For example, when Peter Angelos, owner of the Baltimore Orioles, fired the famous and accomplished commentator Jon Miller, it was because he wanted someone more biased towards the Orioles, supporting them rather than telling the truth.

The reason Scully was loved was because of his trustworthiness. He told only the truth and was reliable and impartial, giving fans the full story.
